Dins del Vegas Loop: com funciona la xarxa de túnels de The Boring Company
Una visita amb Steve Davis mostra les estacions, els Tesla i les tuneladores del Vegas Loop. Expliquem què ja funciona, què és una previsió i quins riscos s’han de vigilar.
Una visita guiada, no una auditoria independent
Farzad recorre el Vegas Loop amb Steve Davis, president de The Boring Company. El vídeo combina tres experiències: un trajecte en Tesla per les estacions en servei, una caminada per un túnel encara tancat al públic i una visita a la tuneladora que excava sota Las Vegas.
El nivell d’accés fa que les imatges siguin molt útils per entendre el sistema. També cal tenir present el context: Davis explica que va demanar una llista de creadors «positius» a qui convidar; Farzad és exempleat i accionista de Tesla i es mostra obertament entusiasmat. Per tant, les xifres i comparacions del directiu s’han de llegir com afirmacions de l’empresa, no com una avaluació neutral.
La idea: taxis elèctrics en una xarxa viària subterrània
Loop no funciona com un metro convencional. Cada grup petit puja a un Tesla, selecciona una destinació i viatja sense aturar-se a totes les estacions intermèdies. Les estacions queden fora de la via principal, com una àrea lateral, de manera que els vehicles que no hi paren poden continuar.
Davis defensa que aquest disseny permet construir estacions petites dins de garatges, hotels o fins i tot negocis modestos. El seu objectiu és que el passatger baixi a menys de 100 peus —uns 30 metres— de la porta de l’edifici. També descriu «estacions annexes»: el cotxe circula per superfície fins al portal més pròxim, entra al túnel i torna a sortir a prop de la destinació.

Què existeix avui i què és el projecte complet
The Boring Company presenta l’LVCC Loop, al centre de convencions, com el primer sistema Loop comercial. L’empresa diu que les tres grans estacions d’aquesta primera fase estan dissenyades per a 4.400 passatgers per hora. El vídeo parla d’uns 40.000 viatgers en un dia de convenció concorregut, però no aporta el registre operatiu que permetria verificar la xifra.
El mapa final és molt més ambiciós: The Boring Company projecta 104 estacions i 68 milles de túnel, amb un objectiu de 90.000 passatgers per hora. Aquest últim número és una capacitat prevista per a la xarxa acabada, no una dada observada del sistema actual.
Durant la gravació, Davis diu que hi ha aproximadament onze estacions disponibles i que vuit més podrien obrir quan arribi l’autorització. També ensenya un túnel de 2,3 milles que ha d’acostar el servei a l’aeroport. Com que els calendaris depenen de permisos, proves i posada en servei, «imminent» no s’ha de convertir en una data garantida.
Moltes estacions distribueixen la demanda, però no creen capacitat infinita
La defensa central de Davis és que una estació petita pot moure aproximadament mil persones per hora i que cent estacions distribueixen el flux. Això funciona quan els orígens i les destinacions estan repartits. El mateix directiu admet l’excepció: un partit, un congrés o un aeroport poden concentrar molta gent al mateix lloc i a la mateixa hora.
Els colls d’ampolla poden aparèixer als portals, les incorporacions, les estacions o els trams compartits. Construir un túnel paral·lel n’augmentaria la capacitat, però requereix diners, sòl, ventilació, sortides, permisos i temps. L’afirmació que sota terra hi ha «capacitat il·limitada» és, doncs, una manera de descriure la possibilitat d’afegir infraestructura, no una propietat del túnel existent.

Per què utilitza cotxes petits
Davis diu que el viatge mitjà transporta unes dues persones. Per això prefereix Model 3, Model Y, Model X o Cybertruck en lloc d’un vehicle gran que circuli mig buit. Per a esdeveniments, esmenta vehicles de sis places i la possibilitat futura d’un Robovan.
És un compromís diferent del transport massiu. Els cotxes petits donen servei directe i freqüent, però necessiten més vehicles, bateries, pneumàtics, personal de neteja i moviments per cada mil passatgers. Un metro concentra molta capacitat en un sol tren; Loop aposta per distribuir-la en trajectes individuals. Comparar-los només per cost per milla o temps porta a conclusions enganyoses si no s’inclouen estacions, vehicles, operació, demanda punta i accessibilitat.
Conducció autònoma: el vídeo mostra una prova, no tots els detalls operatius
Farzad fa un trajecte que el vídeo presenta com a autònom i conversa amb personal dins del vehicle. El tram té un entorn favorable: no hi ha vianants, meteorologia ni trànsit extern, i la infraestructura incorpora balises, comunicacions i gestió centralitzada.
A Nevada, els desenvolupadors han d’autocertificar el compliment i registrar les proves o operacions de vehicles autònoms. Que un cotxe faci un trajecte sense intervenció visible no permet determinar per si sol el nivell SAE, si hi ha un operador de seguretat o supervisió remota, ni les condicions exactes de l’autorització. La mesura important serà el servei sostingut: intervencions, incidències, disponibilitat i rendiment en hora punta.

Què hi ha sota el paviment
La visita al túnel revela que no és només un tub de formigó. Sota la calçada hi ha diversos sistemes de navegació, comunicacions, alimentació elèctrica, internet i drenatge. Davis explica que l’aigua es condueix fins a tractament i que la xarxa utilitza milers de fibres per mantenir comunicacions i supervisió.
En matèria d’incendis, diu que les estacions amaguen grans ventiladors i que els túnels tenen ventilació redundant i bidireccional per dirigir el fum segons indiquin els bombers. La documentació presentada per l’empresa al legislatiu de Nevada també enumera detecció de gas i fum, canonada humida contra incendis, il·luminació redundant, comunicacions d’emergència i cobertura de càmeres.
Clark County va aprovar el juliol de 2026 una ordenança específica per al disseny, operació, manteniment i posada en servei de túnels d’un sol carril. Aquest detall és important: la seguretat no depèn només del disseny declarat per l’operador, sinó de requisits, inspeccions, simulacres i capacitat de resposta pública.
La tuneladora: treure terra és mig projecte
A l’obra, el vídeo mostra dues cadenes logístiques. Una cinta porta el material excavat fins a un dipòsit des d’on s’omplen camions. En sentit contrari, vehicles especials porten dovelles de formigó de 24.000 lliures fins a la màquina. Alguns d’aquests transportadors reutilitzen carrosseries de Tesla Model 3 i són conduïts remotament des d’un centre de control a Texas.
Davis explica que el coll d’ampolla sovint no és tallar terreny, sinó retirar-lo sense saturar els carrers. L’empresa prova túnels de servei per moure material i vol reduir fins a zero les persones a prop del capçal. Automatitzar aquesta zona pot disminuir exposició, però exigeix sistemes fiables per a utilitats, manteniment i recuperació quan alguna cosa falla.

Prufrock i la promesa d’excavar més barat
The Boring Company afirma que Prufrock apunta a més d’una milla per setmana i a un cost total inferior a 8 milions de dòlars per milla de túnel Loop. Són objectius del fabricant, no una garantia aplicable a qualsevol ciutat. Geologia, diàmetre, pous, estacions, serveis desviats, expropiacions i normes de seguretat poden dominar el pressupost.
El vídeo compara el terreny de Las Vegas, que necessita revestiment de dovelles, amb la roca calcària de Nashville. En roca competent es pot prescindir de part del revestiment, però la màquina ja no pot empènyer contra les dovelles i necessita sabates laterals de subjecció. D’aquí neix una variant de tuneladora específica per al Music City Loop.
El contrapunt absent: seguretat laboral i medi ambient
La visita dedica molt espai als sistemes de seguretat del passatger, però no aborda les controvèrsies de l’obra. Documents oficials de Nevada registren queixes i inspeccions sobre exposició a accelerants, cremades químiques, equip de protecció i notificació de lesions. La divisió ambiental també ha documentat acords i expedients relacionats amb abocaments i permisos d’aigua.
Això no demostra que el transport sigui intrínsecament insegur, ni invalida les proteccions descrites per Davis. Sí que obliga a separar dues preguntes: és segur viatjar pel túnel? i s’està construint amb condicions laborals i ambientals correctes? Un balanç complet necessita dades del regulador i de l’empresa.
És transport públic o una carretera privada sota terra?
El Vegas Loop combina trets dels dos models. Té llicència de transport, estacions i control centralitzat, però utilitza vehicles de carretera en túnels estrets i trajectes individualitzats. El sistema pot ser especialment útil en un corredor turístic dens on hotels privats financen accessos i els viatges estan molt distribuïts.
La prova decisiva arribarà quan la xarxa creixi: quants passatgers mou per hora en condicions reals, quant costa operar-la, com serveix persones amb mobilitat reduïda, quina disponibilitat manté i com respon a una evacuació. El vídeo mostra una obra molt més extensa del que veu un usuari. Encara no demostra que el model substitueixi un metro, però sí que The Boring Company ha passat del prototip a una infraestructura en expansió que mereix ser mesurada amb dades públiques.

And so I had asked one of a friend at SpaceX, I said, "Give me a list of 10 like >> objective but like very like positive people who are on X um who should come see Loop." So, I mean, so it's um it's already one of the larger public transportation systems um in the country. It does um this even just this little section >> um does about um on a busy convention day will do 40,000 people. >> Wow. >> Yeah. Which is more than the majority of like light rail systems in America. Um once we open these two tunnels, which you'll see today, which are two of the longest transport tunnels built in America in the last 25 years. Yeah. Um we think ridership will triple, maybe quadruple, but it'll be And at that point, we're literally going to be top 10 in America for transport systems. And when the whole thing is built out, I think we're two or three. >> Wow. >> Yeah. We'll never pass New York City subway based on uh they had a big head start and it's a much denser city, but it'll be us, DC, um Chicago, and New York. And and the beauty of this and one of the reasons we chose Vegas besides it's like a really good place to do business is is the use case because you basically have the airport down here. >> Yeah. >> This is kind of the top of the strip and that's the top of the whole city. Um you can actually imagine if you were going to build let's say anything that stops like a different type of transportation, bus train, etc. >> Stop stop. >> That's a 90minute ride, >> right? So So you wouldn't build that. No, no one will want that. or if you're like, "Oh, I don't want to stop." So that means that you delete these. You have to walk in. >> You lose the flexibility of being able to go to the point. >> So So the end goal of loop is you could have a station in everyone's driveway. It's because every time you add a station, it doesn't affect the transit time. This to this is like eight or nine minutes, no matter how many of these are in the middle. >> And so therefore, the stations are small. they're inexpensive. Um, and so like you'll see like we'll have stations at these giant resorts which you'll see today, but then you'll have a station like a local taco shop because they can actually afford because a station is just a parking lot, right? So as long as you have a parking lot, >> you have a station and then you're pointtooint from your station to anywhere else in the city. >> And so the unlock there, the reason why you are able to do that is because you have individual pods essentially that can actually take somebody from point to point instead of have some sort of Exactly. cars. Yeah, cars are great. It's funny even having to argue that cars are so great that so many people drive them and therefore you get traffic, right? That's that's like an over demand of cars. >> Interesting. >> So like everyone wants a car, but then but then the problem occurs is that everyone wants a car so you have traffic, but then you have to design your cities around cars. So all of a sudden you have cities between 30 and 80% of the land is used for cars. If you could take all of that, keep the car, put it underground, >> and then make your cities beautiful and parks and pedways and all that kind of stuff. Yeah, >> it's pretty awesome. >> It's pretty awesome. And then and then if you ever get to a point where one, let's say one tunnel chokes with traffic, you just build another one. >> Correct. And then another one. >> There is unlimited room. [laughter] As Elon says like it's you have a threedimensional world and a 2D transportation system. So I always get the question is what if you bottleneck your tunnel? >> If that happens, first of all, what a good problem to have. That means that people like our product. You build another one right next to it. And our secret sauce again, cars and tunnels is not like it's like oh man, >> legendary. Like who would think of this? It it's the the cost and speed we can tunnel. That's the secret sauce because you have you have like you can have subway the subway projects in America cost just to construct ignore operations between 1 and 5 billion per mile. We're less than 10 million a mile. >> Wow. >> So >> and and they're and they're fast. >> So um so that's kind of the secret sauce once you do that. I mean the architecture is great. I mean you'll see you get to a station there's a Tesla waiting for you. The door is open. You get in >> with your friends and family. You go point to point to where you want to go and you get out. >> It's an absolute norain. >> And we have a rule at the company which we have not broken yet that when you get out of the Tesla, you're within 100 ft from the the main front door of the property. So you don't have these situations where you're at like >> um you ever flown like Ryan Air and it's like it's amazing, but like >> you don't end up where you you have to [clears throat] take another trip. So So you don't want to go to one of these properties >> and the landing is not so smooth either. [laughter] >> Yeah. You don't want to have to be like a quarter mile away. You want to be 100 feet away. And that's that's the goal. >> And then what what's what's interesting about that too is with with as cars become autonomous, you could even solve that last 100 foot problem too, right? >> It's amazing. You actually pointed out one of the most important things of the system, which is >> it's the only public transit system I'm aware of where the vehicle can go in and out of it. So you're in our warehouse. We don't have a loop station here, but we have a car. >> So by definition, you're in the system. So what the cars do is they just drive. They pick you can pick you up wherever and drive to the nearest tunnel portal.

Yeah. Go in the loop and then come in and drive to wherever you want to go. So, it does >> even if you don't have a um a loop station at your house, you can still actually have access to the tunnel. Most of these it's a third of the size because you only have to fit a certain amount of parking spaces. This one has I don't know 10 parking spaces. A normal one might only have three or four parking spaces. >> So you can basically have very small amounts of land and get a public transportation system. >> Gotcha. >> And then you just need a portal down and you're in the system. >> Look at that. >> And you got some sick lights going on too. You don't have to stop here. If you want to stop, you pull over. >> Uh if you want to turn around, you turn around over there. But if not, you just keep going and not having to just decelerate to zero, open the doors, let people out, etc. And then you keep going. >> And so that's the thought process for every stop you would have like that. You would you would come to your stop, you know, the the passenger. Can they decide where to be dropped off or or do you have to decide before you jump on? >> Oh, I mean when you get in, you tell the driver where you're going, but you can easily change along the way. >> I see. I see. So you're not you're not committed to a specific uh drop off point. You can change your mind halfway through. And if it's fully autonomous, you just I'm guessing you'll just press drop me off here instead or whatever. >> Yep. Yeah. Exactly. And you can see that what we do is we there normal Cyber Truck and we add our traffic management system on a little iPad. >> You want to show that babe on the bottom there under the screen. >> Yeah. >> And you can um like and so for example, if Matt wanted to call in, he could hit the green button that would call the the control center where we just were. So So we're actually surfacing now, but you can you can typically bypass uh any station, but we were just surfacing to show you what this is. >> I see. Um but um so for example, if you that you just saw what that was. It was a ramp. But if you wanted to bypass this is called West Station. Then you would have just taken a right and stayed underground. You'll see that later. But again, look where look where this station is. >> Yeah. You just went from pretty much the uh you know an eastern portion all the way to to a western portion. When we got picked up from the airport yesterday, we were like I think you made a comment, babe. You were like, "Wow, I thought we were like going around and then >> I thought we were just went in a circle and we're back [laughter] where we came out." >> And then we ended up right here, Fountain Blue. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> And so there's actually a tunnel under us right now which we'll take uh we can take on the way back. >> Okay. >> And then uh so you're staying there. So So great. Um and and you can see Rivs. This is a small station. You can see how small they actually can be. The actual infrastructure is about 1,000 square feet. >> Wow. So, and then so using 1,000 ft to get the tunnel to surface. Once it's surface, you can put the parking lot wherever you want. >> Y >> and you can also see when we come around the back here the concept of porposing, which is how our boring machine works. That's the actual tunnel >> on the right here. Yeah. >> Yeah. So, every other boring machine in the world that I'm aware of, you have to dig a giant pit. You drop the boring machine down. >> Oh. >> That we just tilt it down and launch it from the surface. >> So, it saves millions and millions and millions of dollars on every launch. And that's all you need. that much room right there. >> That's it. That's that's the infrastructure. So if you if you can give us that amount of room, you're point to point to anywhere else in the city. >> Was it like 50 by 50 or something? Like how much room do you actually need? >> This one here is 14 by 70 or 15 by 70. >> Okay. So not bad. Yeah. >> Yeah. You can see this is the bypass tunnel I was referring to over here. >> I see. Yeah. >> We have a emergency exit over here. I'm often told we don't have them. We have literally dozens of them. [laughter] >> Yeah. How up? So, how how um h has it been frustrating to communicate to the general public just how valuable this is or is it do you do you find it that it's difficult for the general public to understand the value proposition of because you know cuz in my head I'm like you know people think tunnels and like immediately they're like ah tunnels it's boring like literally like literally right it's like why should I worry about it like like but do you find that once you explain this like it does does a light bulb go off >> anyone who takes the tour you're taking or or is >> they will realize okay got it >> it becomes quite obvious I mean, you just went across the entire city in 3 minutes. >> Yeah, we're on the other side of the street now. [laughter] So, we skipped the entire We skipped the entire strip. The traffic, the craziness at night when it's like insane. You can just hop on here and you're there. >> The the drive you took was 3 minutes. You You should check on like a ride share program. I It was probably about 10 to 15 minutes and it would have been I don't know $15$20. And that would have been a $4 ride on on Loop. >> We went from We went from Fountain Blue to Caesar's Palace. It was 15 minutes and it cost me 26 bucks. >> Yeah. It would be about a 2 to three minute loop ride. >> And how much would it cost? $450 450 a person. Crazy. >> So, have you have you been to this hotel before? >> Uh, no. >> Okay, then we we should get out quickly and show you because it's a good another good show of uh like where the stations are. >> Okay, >> this is a good a good example because this is how you can literally integrate a loop station into an existing parking garage. >> All they had to do to get a loop station was designate a few this area for us >> and that's it. >> So, it's like no different than like having like a ride share spot for like Uber and Lift. It's literally the same. >> Yeah. Just different road network. >> Yeah. So that's like a little map for people like they can see where they can go from here, right? >> Yeah, exactly. So this is this is the non-convention center day map. So that's where you can go today. Now the awesome thing is that in I hope imminently, it should be August. We'll see how how we do. Um >> we open the airport lines. So right now you can do an airport ride, but it's 80% on the surface and 20% in the tunnel, which is not that much better than anyone else. >> But when we open these two tunnels now, it's 90% [music] tunnel, 10% surface the ride. And and at that point, we don't just open that. We open about eight stations along the way. >> So all of a sudden, we're going to go from what we have today, which is, I think, 11 stations to 19 overnight. >> Wow. Uh so those stations are already ready. They're ready dug, ready to go. You just need approval to turn them on. So you're essentially going to double >> Oh, yeah. >> or triple you were saying, right? Yeah. Because now there's airport traffic. There's um we'll be able to go to places like the Sphere, Virgin Hotel, their station opens. Um >> yeah, even some small ones as well. Is it, >> you know, do you have to get approval for the whole project or can you get approval for each station? >> So, every municipality has a different system and obviously no one has like a loop permitting system. So, it's so we did it very differently here than it was done in Nashville. Here it's it's >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. >> Here it's segmented. So, every new thing has its own permit. Um, so we actually need about 600 permits to do the whole thing. >> Okay. >> So, it's a lot. Now, the city's great and we basically work with them. These are the important ones. These are the ones that we have the contract signed and we go from there and then we kind of permit segment and then the next segment and the next segment in Nashville where we have uh two machines going right now. That's that's again why it's a key to have lots of stations because they you know back >> off you can spread out the the >> that's a key part of this where like for example we might do in a station let's say a thousand people an hour and we like people like oh that's a really small number it's like well it's a really big number when you have 100 stations >> it's all about distributing the traffic >> so so the so the more I mean this obviously makes so much sense the more stations you have the more throughput you can have without really materally changing the tunnel itself you're distributing the traffic >> yeah the only place where that breaks down is if everyone is going from place A to place B. But that's not what the that's not what reality is. So during game days, absolutely there'll be a surge right there. But in general, if you have a 100 stations, the stations are >> packed together in general. Like and you can get out where you want to. Everyone's not going to the same place at the same time. Like imagine if you like here, picture you go to like the airport ride share and you surveyed 100 people. Yeah. >> How many people are actually going to the same place? >> 100%. Right. Like 5% maybe. >> Exactly. So [clears throat] therefore, the best thing you can do is give them a car. >> If you give them a huge vehicle, then you're just going to have an empty huge vehicle or a wait time where you wait for it to fill. So you give them a car and get it out of there. So it's really how fast can you load and unload a car? >> Interesting. >> That drives everything. >> And if you ever get to a choke point issue, can you just do like a port like can you add another tunnel for that for that segment and then just marry them somewhere? >> 100%. We already have small portions of this that have two parallel tunnels. Um, and again, if if if the system's doing so well that a segment is bottlenecked, that means it's it's economically doing well, so you can afford to build another tunnel. >> Wow. >> That's why there there literally is unlimited capacity underground. It's just a matter of how fast you can build tunnels. >> Yeah. And scaling it is literally just an engineering problem, right? >> Is how many machines do you have? How many machines you have? Yeah. And how many permits do you have? If you have machines and permits, you can like >> have you had hotels reach out to you like to be like, "Hey, I actually want so like for I'm assuming like uh you know, Caesars and all these places like I'm assuming somebody has been here from those tunnel hotel networks. They're like, "Holy [ __ ] that would have been great to have there." Are you seeing that? >> Yeah. No, BD isn't the issue. Um when we we already have the So when I said we don't have this project permitted, we have it entitled, which means we're allowed to get it permitted. It's like the first step. when 120 um property owners have signed have signed that entitlement. I see. Okay. >> And what we actually do actually just for time we should get rolling. What we actually do it's kind of a funny land problem. Now the strip was one thing. Every single property on the strip signed that that would be imagine being the one that doesn't have loop access. It would be like a weird decision. Exactly. >> But um but if you picture what we actually do when we're tunneling um this is like a very subtle point. I don't know any other companies that would have to do this is picture you're like tunneling down a road and the question is is do you go under the road or do you clip the private property? Um and so we're not allowed to clip the private property without their permission. So what we do is we go to every single property owner and say our machine is going to be here in 6 months or whatever it is. >> Would you like us to clip your property or bypass you? >> And if they if they don't respond or they say bypass we bypass. If they say clip we clip. Now, the advantage of getting clipped is now we're under their property. So, if they want to build a station, they don't have to build a station, but if they want to build a station, they just have to dig down and we're right there. If we're not under the property, now you're hacking up public right away, major roads. Like, are you going to hack up the strip? Like, of course not. >> Um, so, so therefore, >> almost anyone who's really being rational will say, "Of course, clip my property." >> Yeah, of course. >> Even if I don't know if I want a station. And the beauty is because of what I said earlier about um the express nature, they can build a tunnel a station five years from now and it doesn't affect anyone else. >> Wow. So it's a kind of like it's kind of like laying fiber in a neighborhood and then deciding if you actually want to have fiber at your house. >> Yeah. So, for example, we opened like if you look at our tunnels under Paradise, which is um uh the the airport tunnel. >> Um there are more clippings by far than there are stations because a lot of people just said, "Okay, we're going to let's let's wait to see how this how this plays out." >> Um but but they they made the right decision because when they do want it, then the tunnel is right there. So, I'm going to guess this is going to have a similar like, you know, like if you think about self-driving cars as an as an example, and you have uh jurisdictions that approve self-driving cars versus those that don't, >> those that don't are going to be in in a position where they're not going to have this economic forcing function for people to come out of their house. And so, any jurisdiction that doesn't approve it or doesn't have an option for it here, let me open the door for you, baby. Um we run our own um own internet because like we have to have your own network. And so we have, if you actually do it out, um, because we run thousands and thousands of strands, you end up with literally, I think the number, it's insane, but it's something like 10 to 20,000 miles of fiber strands that are just running through this. >> Dang, that's wild. >> It It's It's an insane problem. >> Wow. And so and and this so that that actually begs the question too like how much how much does the >> like how much benefit is there to the city to have something like this because you can naturally run all the different cabling and even like I don't know like piping or anything. Could this be outfitted to do like dual purpose or even single purpose? >> 100%. We we have we run a ton of spare conduit under there in case we forget something or in case someone wants to add it's it's going into a different business model. Like I've always said that in an urban setting, all utilities should be in in in tunnels because if not, every time you install it, you hack through the asphalt. >> Every time it leaks, you hack through the asphalt. If it does leak, if it's a water line, you flood the street. It's supposed to you flood the tunnel. >> And then anytime you want to service it in tunnel, you just walk in the tunnel. And then if it's oops, I forgot a fiber line. Oops, I forgot a power line. You just run it through here. >> Exactly. And so it ends up actually being less expensive >> to tunnel than to hack up the asphalt. Not even considering not even considering the like inconvenience to all the people when you're closing roads. So from a construction like you know you know it's like you might be on a major street and they want to do like a minor upgrade to a light pole and they have to shut you know shut a lane >> that's happening around us all the time where we live. It's just a belt that is extremely long. So when you build a 2 and 1 half mile long tunnel, you have a 2 and 1/2 mile top supply belt and a 2 and 1/2 mile bottom return belt. So it's literally 5 miles of continuous rubber belt that all runs through this cassette. This is all built 100% by boring company in Texas >> in our factory. And that's how you get the dirt out. >> And this is a bass drop, right? >> Everything. So we build >> everything's back. Yeah. So on Proof Rock one, we built about 30% of the parts. Our newest machine you only actually need two people in the tunnel. >> Oh wow. >> Total. everyone else is on the surface controlling uh from from the Texas the Texas site. >> Yeah. >> Um >> and so that's kind of the first key is getting people out of the tunnel. One thing we've Elon pointed out is like why are people even in the tunnel, right? >> Like like oil and gas goes miles and miles at smaller diameters without any people in there. Why what what person what engineer along the way changed it to put a the second you put a person in there, >> right? >> Your entire machine becomes a safety system. So, if you look at the front of the machine, it is more than half of it is safety systems. >> Wow. >> Um, as it should be because there's people in there. So our newest machines can actually do them at the same time which took about 4 years for us to figure out how to do >> and so that by definition pretty much doubles your speed because in a normal machine including most of our at least older machines um >> you push you build you push you build and that's considered normal but I consider build to be a failure because you're not pushing right so the goal is to be pushing while you're doing the build which is quite difficult because >> you have a bunch of propulsion cylinders in the way so you basically have to do a big dance of getting them out of the way while you're pushing. This is like how does that machine which has millions of pounds of thrust actually move forward is to push off something. It pushes off the tunnel. So in other words, like you'll have like you have your segment, your tunnel is just sitting there and you put a propulsion shoe against it and you push push push push push. So the tunnel is actually not designed like the driving load case for the tunnel is actually not the ground. It's the boring machine. >> Wow. >> And the boring machine pushes against it and that's how it moves forward. So you picture literally that's a million pound machine and the whole thing has to push against our tunnel in order to move forward. So that's why the tunnel is actually so beefy. >> Wow. >> But then so then so that's so we built that machine. It took a long time to get it get like pretty good. And then we accepted the um the project in Nashville. Um but Nashville is pure rock, limestone. >> Oh. >> Um which means in most places, not all, but in most you don't need a liner because the rock is like 14, 15,000 PSI. It's better than concrete. >> So like there's some cool pictures we posted on X of like our guys in the tunnel and everyone's like, "Oh, how'd you make that surf that finish?" And we're like, "We didn't. That's literally the natural rock of Nashville." >> Wow. So, it's way um faster and way less expensive. But then the question is, well, how do you move forward if you don't have a tunnel to push off of? And the way you do it, it's pretty wild. This thing called gripping, which is instead of pushing like this, picture like you're in, you know how like you can do like the acrobatic drip where you're like, let's say you're in a tube and you want to hover, you just push really hard against the tube. >> It's that except you push with 4 million pounds horizontally. >> Wow. >> And that's called gripping. And then you mine forward and then you ungrip and regrip and ungrip. And so it's a it's a completely different machine. So in order to do the national project, we had to um design a new machine. >> Holy. >> That had a completely But with that said, it's actually way faster because you don't have um a liner. >> Um there's actually three I didn't even show you there. There's actually three major subsystems >> on the machine that you can just delete, which is the ultimate Elon strategy. But but the problem is if you optimize for like everything, it ends up just being eh of course for everything.
